But by chance, those days were inauspicious (Αποφράδες ημέραι), and it was not proper for oracles to be given during them. He first sent a messenger to beg the Pythia (the priestess). However, since she refused and cited the law as her reason, he himself went up to the temple and urgently pressed her. She, as if overcome by his insistence and haste, said to him: "ἀνίκητος εἶ ὦ παῖ" "You are invincible, my son." After hearing this, Alexander said that he no longer needed any other oracle, he had already received from her the oracle he wanted. (Source: Plutarch, Alexander) Alexander never lost a single battle in his entire life. He remained completely undefeated from his first campaign in 335 BC until his death in 323 BC. |
